Elder W. Eugene Hansen served in the First Quorum of the Seventy since from 1989 to 1998. He was also in the Presidency of the Seventy form 1993 untill he was granted general authroity emeritus status is 1998. He previously served as president of the Asia North Area, headquartered in Tokyo. At the time of his call to the First Quorum of the Seventy, Elder Hansen was serving as a stake president. Previous to that assignment, he had served in numerous ward and stake positions.
An East Garland, Utah, native and a 1950 graduate of Utah State University (with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics), Elder Hansen earned his juris doctorate from the University of Utah in 1958. He retired after active and reserve Army duties as a full colonel. He holds both the Legion of Merit and the Meritorious Service medals.
Before his call to the Seventy, Elder Hansen was a trial lawyer in Salt Lake City for several years. He served as president of the Utah State Bar Association and is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation. He is a charter member of the American Inn of Court I and has served as its president.
He also served as a member and chairman of the Utah State Board of Regents, which governs Utah higher education. In addition, he was a member of the Utah State University Board of Trustees and received that school’s Distinguished Service Award.
Elder Hansen passed away on November 5, 2016.
