Thomas B. Holman

Dr. Thomas B. Holman earned his bachelor’s degree in history and German from Utah State University and his master’s and doctoral degrees from BYU. He was employed as the director of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Utah County, working with single-parent children and adolescents. He has also worked for many years as a social work officer in the United States Army Reserves, and he worked for the Boys Club of America. He served a mission in Germany.
Professor Holman is a certified family life educator, and he teaches classes and workshops on marriage and family relationships, LDS mar­riage and the family, mate selection, family theory, and qualitative research methods. He is currently studying cou­ple conflict and how it affects marital quality. His research interests include courtship, premarital prediction of later marital quality, couple communi­cation, parent-adolescent relationships, and the development of questionnaires to assess couple relationship quality. He is the primary author of the new RELATionship Evaluation (RELATE) questionnaire that is being used by thousands of couples and professionals to prepare people for marriage and to strengthen existing marriages. Dr. Holman is the author or coauthor of numerous professional articles, two books, and a family-strengthening workbook with activities entitled FamilyTogether.
Brother Holman has served the Church as Aaronic priesthood advisor to deacons, teachers, and priests; Primary teacher; family relations Sunday School teacher; elders quorum president; bishop; branch president; bishop’s/branch president’s counselor; and high councilman. He is currently the high priest group leader in his ward. He and his wife, Linda, are the parents of five children.
