Stephen E. Robinson was a Brigham Young University faculty member from 1986 to 2012. He served as the chairman of the Department of Ancient Scripture for many years. Before joining BYU, Robinson established himself as a tenured faculty member at Lycoming College and taught at Hampden-Sydney College, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Duke University.
Robinson earned his bachelor’s degree in English and philosophy from the BYU Honors Program in 1971. He continued his scholarly pursuits at Duke University, earning a doctorate in biblical studies and classics in 1978. Robinson’s research has been published in esteemed scholarly venues such as publications by the Society of Biblical Literature, Revue de Qumrân, the Coptic Encyclopedia, Journal for the Study of Judaism, and the Anchor Bible Dictionary.
Beyond his academic achievements, Robinson is known for his spiritually impactful books, including Believing Christ (awarded Best Book at ILDS Booksellers in 1995), Following Christ (awarded Best Book at ILDS Booksellers in 1996), and How Wide the Divide? (awarded Best Book at Christianity Today in 1997).
He and his wife, Janet, raised six children. Robinson passed away in June 2018.
