Shawn W. Miller is an associate professor in the Department of History. He received his bachelor’s degree from BYU and served a mission to the Brazil Rio de Janeiro Mission before completing graduate work in environmental history at Columbia University.
Professor Miller joined the BYU faculty in 1997 and just completed a term as chair of the Department of History. His academic work examines Latin America’s relationships with trees in tropical forests and with streets in tropical cities. His book An Environmental History of Latin America (Cambridge University Press, 2007) won the Melville Prize for Latin American Environmental History.
Brother Miller is a recreational baker of bread and an unswerving bicycle commuter. His wife, Kelly, graduated from BYU in American studies.
