Jeremy Black studied and graduated with a starred First from Queens’ College Cambridge and undertook research at two colleges of the University of Oxford: St John’s and Merton. In 1880, Black became a lecturer at the University of Durham, where he taught for many years and ultimately received his doctorate and professorship in 1994. He then joined Exeter University as the established chair in history in 1996.
Black has written over one hundred books covering a variety of topics, including eighteenth-century British, European, and American politics; diplomatic and military history; history of the press; cartographic history; newspaper history; the nature and uses of history; and international relations.
Black has also served as editor of Archives, a leading archives journal, and has been a member of several councils and committees: the Council of the British Records Association, the Council of the Royal Historical Society, and the Council of the List and Index Society. He has lectured extensively internationally.
