Gayle Clegg
Gayle M. Clegg, born on June 23, 1942, in Glendale, California, is the oldest of five children. She was born to Grant A. and Lillie T. Muhlestein and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. She completed her education at the University of Utah and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history. It was during her time at the university that she met Calvin C. Clegg, whom she married on August 14, 1964, in the Salt Lake Temple. They have five children.
The Clegg family spent the next 16 years living in various locations including Florida; Arizona; Washington, DC; New Jersey; Brazil; and Argentina. For two years, the Cleggs lived in Brazil where Sister Clegg served as a Primary teacher. For this calling, she memorized whole lessons in Portuguese to teach the children until she learned the language. They then moved to Argentina, where they held many ward activities in their home over the three and a half years that they lived there. In 1980, the Cleggs returned to Salt Lake City.
Sister Clegg is avid about the field of education and taught elementary school from 1982 to 1996. She also served on writing curriculum committees in the Salt Lake school district and supervised student teachers.
In addition to her professional career, Sister Clegg served as a former ward Primary president, Young Women president, and gospel doctrine teacher. From 1996 to 1999, she served as a mission leader with her husband during his presidency of the Portugal Lisbon North Mission.
