Christopher (Chip) Oscarson was born in St. Louis, Missouri. When he was young, his father was called as a mission president and the family relocated to Sweden. They were living in Boston, Massachusetts, when Oscarson graduated high school. He returned to Sweden to serve a mission, after which he went on to BYU to earn a bachelor’s degree in history in 1997 and a master’s degree in comparative literature in 1999. He completed his PhD in Scandinavian studies and film studies from the University of California, Berkeley and joined the BYU faculty as director of Scandinavian Studies in 2005. His efforts at BYU include working with the International Cinema, editing a three-volume history of Nordic literature, and serving as an associate dean of Undergraduate Education beginning in May 2020. Additionally, he studies environmental humanities, a discipline that seeks to conduct interdisciplinary research in current environmental issues.
He and his wife, Marie-Laure, are the parents of four children.
