Dr. Chad F. Emmett is a professor in the Department of Geography who received a bachelor’s degree in secondary education with a history/geography teaching emphasis from Utah State University, a master’s degree in international relations and Middle Eastern studies from BYU, and a PhD in geography from the University of Chicago. As part of the research for Dr. Emmett’s dissertation, he spent one year living in Nazareth learning about the relations between Christian and Muslim Arabs. His book entitled Beyond the Basilica: Christian and Muslims in Nazareth presents the findings from that research.
A native of Logan, Utah, Professor Emmett has just completed his sixth year teaching geography at BYU. He currently serves as coordinator of the international studies major. He has research interests in the geography of Israel/Palestine and in understanding how that land may be shared more peacefully. He served a mission in Indonesia, and in the past he worked as an Indonesian linguist for the National Security Agency. He has also taught seminary and was an assistant professor of geography at De Paul University in Chicago.
