Albert Ernest Bowen was born on October 31, 1875, in Henderson Creek, Idaho. At the age of 20, he attended Brigham Young College in Logan, Utah, simultaneously completing high school and college courses. He graduated in 1902. He married Aletha Reeder soon after and went on to serve a full-time mission in Switzerland and Germany. After his mission, he began work as a faculty member at Brigham Young College. Sadly, his wife died giving birth to their twin boys.
Bowen continued his education at the University of Chicago Law School. He graduated with honors and returned to Logan, marrying Emma Lucy Gates soon after. The Bowen family moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, where Bowen worked with companies such as the Utah Construction Company, the Utah Fuel Company, and the American Savings and Loan Association.
An active member of the Church, Bowen served in many callings throughout his life, including general superintendent of the Young Men’s Mutual Improvement Association and member of the general board of the Deseret Sunday School Union. In April 1937, he was called as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. He passed away on July 25, 1953, in Salt Lake City.
