Dr. Alan R. Harker is the associate academic vice president for research and graduate studies at BYU. He has been part of the faculty of the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Biology for almost 22 years, serving as department chair and as an associate dean of the College of Life Sciences.
Dr. Harker received his PhD from the University of Utah in biology after receiving BS degrees in chemistry and biology from the same institution. He completed his education as a postdoctoral fellow in the Nitrogen Fixation Laboratory at Oregon State University and as a research associate with the Environmental Protection Agency in Corvallis, Oregon. Before moving to BYU, Dr. Harker was an associate professor at Oklahoma State University in the Department of Microbiology.
Dr. Harker served a mission in France and Belgium. He and his wife, Stephanie Wright Harker, are the parents of three children and grandparents to twelve. He currently serves as a stake president in Springville.
